π How long can marimo survive without water?
Based on our experience, marimo can stay out of water for more than 20 days without any harm, as long as they are thoroughly soaked in water and kept in the resealable bag we use for shipping.
However, if you have bought marimo as a gift for someone and it will be more than 3 days before you give them away, we recommend placing them in any container filled with water. Once you’re ready to give them as a gift, simply place them back in the resealable bag.
What should I do after receiving my package?
Itβs very simple. Take the marimo out of the bag and place them in a container filled with cold water (tap water is fine). Itβs a good idea to gently roll and squeeze them underwater to rinse away any dirt and help them regain their natural shape. More information HERE.
π Where can I keep my marimo?
Our jars are the perfect choice, but you can keep your marimo in any glass container filled with water.
It is very important to keep the container away from windows and direct sunlight. Strong light can eventually cause your marimo to turn yellow.
The best places are shaded areas in your home or office.
π What does regular marimo care involve?
Marimo only need their water changed once every two weeks. When changing the water, gently roll and squeeze the marimo underwater in a sink. This helps wash away dirt and prevents the water from becoming cloudy or dirty too quickly.
If you notice that something is not quite right, change the water and gently rinse the marimo more frequently.
π Why is my marimo floating?
This simply means that gases have built up inside the marimo. Gently squeeze the marimo underwater to release the trapped gases (you will see bubbles rising to the surface), and the marimo will naturally sink back to the bottom.
If you like your marimo floating, you can simply leave it as it is. There is nothing to worry about. More information HERE.
π What temperature should the water be for marimo?
Water temperature is not particularly important for marimo. They can tolerate extreme temperatures for short periods of time, including very hot water and even complete freezing. However, they thrive best at room temperature or cooler.
π How often should I change the water, and how much should I replace?
We recommend changing the water once every two weeks. However, changing it more frequently is perfectly fine as well.
You can replace all of the water at once and use the opportunity to clean any deposits or buildup from the container.
π What do marimo live on?
Marimo need nothing more than ordinary water and gentle light, which provide them with everything they need to thrive.
They donβt need anything else to live.
π Does marimo require any additional care?
Itβs a good idea to occasionally give your marimo a little love and gently massage them, preferably underwater or under running tap water. Not only is this a nice way to show your marimo some love, but it also helps wash away dirt and keeps them happy and healthy.
π How fast do marimo grow?
Marimo grow very slowly, typically around 0.5-1 cm per year.
π How long do marimo live?
With the right conditions and proper care, marimo can live for 100 years or more (perhaps even longer. Who knows…?)
π Can marimo reproduce?
Yes, they can. You can simply cut a marimo in half, but we donβt really recommend this, as it will destroy its natural round shape. More information HERE.
A better option is to let your marimo grow naturally and wait until a tiny piece naturally breaks away. This piece can then gradually develop into a new marimo. However, given how slowly marimo grow, youβll need to be very patient.
π Is marimo poisonous?
Marimo are not poisonous to humans or animals. However, we do not recommend eating them.
